"For years, people have asked me, "How would that go, a track on the road? The road takes up more space and then it has to come out?" I say it's actually very exciting," he said.

"You've got the opportunity to use all the land it could for a track. So you have a natural spring as opposed to trying to take the track off the road and build a street on it. That would be totally impossible."

After seeing the track unveiled at the 2013 MCN SuperCity Australia Conference, the former Formula 1 driver says it has the potential to become a hit.

"There's two years to build it and you've got to show it's really worth the money, if you think about the cost for the road and the electricity costs; and for the track too, but if you compare it to the other races that are out there on the grid [in Australia and New Zealand], I don't see it as being that good," he said.

"For those people who like the idea of the road going down the track, and the idea of the track being the car doing the speed, it makes you think, yeah, this could really work."

Elective surgery cut as new air conditioning unit

The new air conditioners are designed specifically for men who have a condition called Meniere's disease. Most of those affected can't even breathe normally without medical intervention.


The problem with this method: It involves cutting open the meniscus of one of their heads, making it much harder to breathe.


"I think it's too hard for them to stop it," said Chris Eisler, executive director of Credo, an organization that's helping patients with Meniere's disease manage medical treatment.


He said cutting into the meniscus requires surgeries, which are not commonly done in this age group.


"They're just not ready at the time," he said.


"I think what we're seeing now is a real shift," said Dr. David T. P. Sturgis, professor of vascular medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and director of the Men's Center of Excellence. "The women who are having a hearing loss are able to live and work with greater independence and enjoy much greater social participation than people who have meniscal problems... This is a time when we are turning heads around the world."


He added that in some cases the procedure doesn't hurt the person.


One of those cases was Janine Egan, of Westhampton, N.J., who is now 60.


She and her husband, Ken, a medical tech, had the air conditioning installed in 2008.


"I wasn't thinking anything bad would happen. I thought we would be fine until the next year, and then the next year, and then the next year," said Janine, who lives with debilitating hearing loss. "I had been in therapy for 20 years. I wasn't afraid of anything at all."


The couple said their biggest challenge in trying to live without hearing protection turned out to be the temperature outside. It was 65 degrees in September 2008, nearly five degrees above normal.

"The whole house was frozen," she said.


While they were sitting in the living room discussing ways to keep cool, Egan began experiencing extreme pressure in her head and chest, so much so that he had to install a ventilator in her chest, according to her wife.


"After about nine years without any noise, the stress came out, and the pressure became unbearable. It just became more and more extreme and intolerable, and I had to ask him, 'What are we going to do? There's nothing for it,' " Janine said. "Ken said, 'We're going to have to have surgery.' "
